This open access book provides an overview of the development and future of offshore wind in the United States. The authors examine the history of U.S. wind energy and then conduct a comparative case study analysis of the current status of offshore wind in three areas of the United States: New England, the Mid-Atlantic, and the Gulf of Mexico. These three areas were chosen because their offshore wind industries are currently in various stages of development: Rhode Island has the United States' first working offshore wind farm, Virginia is in the testing phase for offshore wind, and both Texas and Louisiana have scheduled and conducted leasing sales for offshore wind development. Since the industry is nascent within the United States, we also include a comparative analysis of the more mature offshore wind industry in Europe. After examining the cases, the authors conduct an across-case analysis and provide a projected future (or lack thereof) for the offshore wind industry in the United States.
