This book provides readers with a new angle to understand the progress of legal construction in China, by making a comprehensive and interdisciplinary analysis of the translation of laws and regulations in China from the perspective of national governance. Although there is a growing awareness of the social functions of translation among scholars at home and abroad, there still lacks systematic and comprehensive studies on translation of Chinese laws and regulations. Therefore, guided by theories from disciplines such as jurisprudence, linguistics, translation, etc., this book aims to provide professional legal translators and general readers alike who are interested in this field with an integrated theoretical framework by focusing on the bi-directional interaction between legal translation and national governance. This book not only serves as a practical guide for readers to translate the related documents both accurately and appropriately, but more importantly, it depicts a panorama of China’s national efforts of rule of law modernization through translation practices and answer the critical question of how the translation of  laws and regulations in China contributes to the modernization of its national governance and how this tie can be further developed in the future.

Xiaobo Dong is a distinguished professor of Jilin International Studies University, a professor at School of Foreign Languages and Cultures of Nanjing Normal University, and the deputy director of the Belt and Road Rule of Law Research Center at Academy of China’s Modernization of Rule of Law and Researcher at Jiangsu Academy of Talent Development Strategy. He is a renowned contemporary Chinese jurist and legal linguist in China. He is also the director and chief expert of Jiangsu International Rule of Law Research Center, as well as the chief expert on major projects of the National Social Science Fund of China. His research interests include history of Sino-west civilization exchanges, legal linguistics, legal translation, language strategy and planning, cross-cultural communication. In recent years, he has published over 250 interdisciplinary academic papers in prominent journals and more than 80 books, including academic monographs, edited volumes, and translations.

Yafang Zhang is lecturer at School of Foreign Languages of Southwest University of Political Science and Law and researcher at Jiangsu International Rule of Law Research Center. Her research interests include Sino-west cultural exchanges, legal linguistics, translation of Chinese legal classics, and language planning. In recent years, she has published 4 books in legal linguistics study and multiple interdisciplinary academic papers.
