This book is the culmination of Prof. Zheng Yongnian’s work on the development of China’s original knowledge framework. Since China’s reform and opening up, the country has opened its doors wide and there have been increased exchanges between China and foreign countries. But the gap between China and the world in terms of the views on world politics have become increasingly explicit. China lacks a knowledge system capable of explaining itself to the outside world. For a long time, Chinese intellectuals have borrowed concepts and theories from ‘others’ to explain themselves,and the result not only failed to explain themselves, but, rather, misinterpreted themselves. This requires intellectuals, that is, knowledge producers, to think about how the Western knowledge system was produced and how we can build a Chinese knowledge system. This intervention from one of China's most notable public intellectuals will interest China scholars, scholars of cultural studies and journalists.

Professor Yongnian Zheng is Dean of the School of Public Policy and Director of the Institute for International Affairs, Qianhai (IIA), the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen. He is also the Chairman of the Academic Committee of the Institute of Public Policy at the South China University of Technology. Prof. Zheng’s major research areas are international relations, foreign policy, China-US relations, China’s internal development and its external relations. His papers have appeared in journals such as Comparative Political Studies, Political Science Quarterly, Third World Quarterly, and The China Quarterly.

Dr. Yanling Zhu is an associate research professor at the Institute of Public Policy, South China University of Technology. She is presently researching cultural policy and international politics, with a focus on global communication. She is the author of Media Power and its Control in Contemporary China: The Digital Regulatory Regime, National Identity, and Global Communication (Palgrave Macmillan, 2022). Her work has appeared in leading academic journals such as International Journal of Cultural Policy. She has made significant contributions to a number of policy publications.
