Technology & Engineering / Materials Science / General

The book presents a comprehensive analysis of how additive manufacturing is revolutionizing biomedical engineering. It effectively covers both conceptual basics and advanced applications to fit any level of understanding among readers.

Some of the areas covered in the chapters include bioprinting systems, advanced structures, and dimensional accuracy. Ranging from custom prosthetics, and orthopedic implants to tissue engineering scaffolds the book also highlights how additive manufacturing revolutionizes the field by enabling precision, customization, and innovation in biomedical solutions. The inclusion of regulatory and quality assurance issues makes this a good reference book on the technological and compliance issues concerning the manufacturing of medical devices and implants.

Intended for researchers and practitioners in the areas of biomedical engineering, materials science and additive manufacturing, the books supplements theoretical analysis with real-life examples from a variety of industries, giving readers a birds-eye view of the current state and future possibilities of the subject matter. The book also aims to enhance the foundational understanding among undergraduate-level learners and scholars by including learning objectives, review questions, and other kinds of pedagogical tools in the chapters.

Dr. Sudipto Datta served as a National Postdoctoral Fellow at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, India, for two years after completing his Ph.D. He previously worked at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, and Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Roorkee as a Research Scientist. His research focuses on tissue engineering, regenerative medicine, 3D/4D bioprinting, biomaterials, biosensors, nanomaterials, organ-on-a-chip systems, microfluidics, and lab-on-a-chip technologies. He has expertise in advanced bioinks, extrusion-based bioprinting, magnetic nanoparticle-assisted actuation, and scaffold fabrication for skin, bone, neural, tracheal, and vascular tissue engineering applications. He has contributed to innovations in precision biofabrication and biomaterial scaffold development, with findings published in peer-reviewed journals and presented at international conferences. He is also the author of books and book chapters in the fields of bioprinting, biomaterials, and regenerative medicine, and has received multiple prestigious awards, including the DST-SERB National Postdoctoral Fellowship

Dr. Dileep Pathote is a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the Department of Materials Engineering at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, India. His research focuses on metallic coatings, corrosion, wear, material characterization, biocompatibility, and Additive manufacturing. He has actively participated in numerous national and international workshops and training programs. He is an esteemed reviewer for several SCI-indexed journals, including Advanced Engineering Materials, Journal of Materials Science, and Steel Research International. Dr. Pathote received the "Best Oral Presentation Award" at the International Conference Corrosion and Coatings held at CSIR-NML Jamshedpur. He was also honored under the Maharshi Protshajan Scheme by the Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister (2016). He earned an Honour Code Certificate in HS791xS16: Technical Communication for Scientists and Engineers from IITBombayX (2016).

Professor Sujata Mohanty is a leading expert in stem cell research and regenerative medicine. She serves as a Professor at the Stem Cell Facility (DBT-Centre of Excellence for Stem Cell Research) at AIIMS, New Delhi. Her research focuses on stem cell biology, tissue engineering, and translational medicine, contributing significantly to advancements in regenerative therapies. With numerous high-impact publications in international journals, she has played a key role in developing novel stem cell-based approaches for treating various medical conditions. She has also been actively involved in organizing international conferences and fostering collaboration between researchers and clinicians in translational medicine. Her work has earned recognition for its impact on biomedical sciences, and she continues to mentor young researchers in the field.
