Organic Chemical Methods

in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Medicine, and Pharmacy

Daniel Krois

Science / Life Sciences / Biochemistry

This book explains synthetic and analytical methods of organic chemistry that are used in applications and research in biochemistry, molecular biology, medicinal chemistry, and pharmaceutical chemistry. It is intended as a textbook for master’s studies in chemistry as well as in biological and medicinal‑chemical disciplines. Owing to the extensive literature references, it is also suitable as a monograph for practitioners in research laboratories.

A basic understanding of organic chemistry is assumed, but essential aspects are reviewed in Chapters 1 and 2. Part 1 of the book covers general methods for the three main groups of biopolymers: peptides and proteins, carbohydrates and glycoconjugates, and nucleic acids. Chapter 7 introduces conjugate formation for labeling biomolecules. Part 2, on the other hand, highlights selected topics based on specific recent publications. This allows readers to follow the application of the methodology developed in Part 1 within a biological context. The teaching objective of this book is to illustrate method development for biological questions to chemistry students and thereby encourage further advancement. Students and researchers from biological and medical fields are intended to gain a better understanding of both the possibilities and the underlying principles of the methodologies. This is meant to foster interdisciplinary understanding.

Ass. Prof. Dr. Daniel Krois, Department of Chemical Catalysis, Faculty of Chemistry, University of Vienna. His research focuses on the organic synthesis of heterocycles, conformational analysis, peptide chemistry, and spectroscopy. He teaches organic chemistry for molecular biologists and microbiologists, as well as for master’s students in chemistry and biological chemistry.
