Mieczyslaw Makosza was a professor of organic chemistry at the Faculty of Chemistry at Warsaw Technical University in Poland, and the Director of the Institute of Organic Chemistry at the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw from 1979 until his retirement in 2004. He passed away in January 2026. He was a world-renowned expert in organic synthesis and one of the pioneers of phase-transfer catalysis. Another of his significant contributions to organic chemistry was the formulation of a general mechanism of nucleophilic aromatic substitution.

Michal Fedorynski was a professor of organic chemistry at Warsaw Technical University in Poland until he retired in 2016. His research interests include phase-transfer catalysis and the chemistry of carbanions and dihalocarbenes.
