The Promise and Peril of AI

The Question of Restraint

Sajib Talukder | Nur Imtiazul Haque

Computers / Artificial Intelligence / General

This book explores the double-edged power of artificial intelligence (AI) and provides readers with a clear and practical understanding of AI’s opportunities and risks. From saving lives in hospitals to reshaping economies, AI is transforming our world at lightning speed. However, with that power comes risks, job loss, misinformation, and even threats to security and human agency. People are asking: what can’t be replaced by AI? Drawing lessons from history, specifically the Great Depression, this book asks how do we guide AI responsibly before it outruns us and how can we navigate today’s fast-moving AI landscape? Blending real-world examples with a practical framework for governance, the authors offer readers, whether policymakers, professionals, or curious citizens, a clear path to understanding and shaping the future of AI as well as a guide to make thoughtful, informed decisions. Readers will learn to recognize both the positive potential of AI, such as new jobs and enhanced human abilities, and the dangers, including overreliance on machines, autonomous weapons, and AI-driven bioweapons. In addition, a comprehensive case study is included in every chapter that make abstract concepts understandable and applicable. Through detailed examination of topics from job displacement to existential risks, readers develop a nuanced understanding of different risk categories, their interconnections, and appropriate responses. This includes learning to distinguish between immediate practical concerns and longer-term systemic risks, enabling more sophisticated decision-making in uncertain environments. Above all, the book encourages readers to pause, reflect, and approach AI development wisely, helping them understand the broader societal impact and prepare for a future shaped by intelligent technology.

Sajib Talukder is a Ph.D. student in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at Virginia Tech, and he received his M.Sc in Transportation Engineering at The George Washington University (GWU). Prior to Virginia Tech, he worked as a research associate at GWU and completed an internship at the Institute of Advanced Computing. He also worked as a software engineer at Shohoz Limited in Bangladesh where he led the development of RailSheba, Bangladesh Railway's official ticketing app, which serves over five million users nationwide and has received more than 10,000 reviews. Currently, he is developing machine learning and AI-powered tools to mitigate spam calls and messages. Standing at the forefront of AI innovation, he develops cutting-edge applications, and his professional experience successfully bridges academic research with large-scale industry implementation. He also served as a reviewer for many conferences and journals in AI, software engineering, the Internet of Things (IoT), and machine learning.

Nur Imtiazul Haque, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science at Northern Illinois University, where he conducts research at the intersection of AI, cybersecurity, and security and dependability analysis of cyber-physical systems. He received his Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering and M.Sc. in Computer Engineering from Florida International University. His research focuses on securing cyber-physical systems, the Internet of Things (IoT), critical infrastructure, and AI-enabled systems, with particular emphasis on formal methods, machine learning, optimization, and resilient system design. His research has resulted in peer-reviewed publications, patented work, and recognition including the IEEE/IFIP DSN 2023 Best Paper Award. He has also contributed to federally funded research projects supported by agencies including the National Science Foundation and the U.S. Department of Energy. In 2026, Dr. Haque received an Illinois Innovation Voucher grant as the academic Principal Investigator in collaboration with Noxon Holdings LLC, further advancing his industry-engaged research in cybersecurity and artificial intelligence.
