A Transdisciplinary Approach to Uncertain Landscapes explores the concept of landscape as a site of dialogue among heterogeneous and discontinuous “critical zones,” drawing on Bruno Latour’s framework of spaces where epistemological conflicts converge. It examines how such landscapes make visible what is often overlooked: variability, multiplicity, and the interplay of different scales, temporalities, and disciplines.

Approached as transversal mediators, it reveals complexity through accessible forms, shifting emphasis away from a purely visual definition toward experience, collective processes, and the intersection of diverse forms of knowledge. The provisional nature of uncertain landscaepes raises the question of whether they will persist or be supplanted by more instrumental frameworks.

The book positions landscape as a conceptual tool for rethinking human relationships with inhabited environments. It seeks to disrupt disciplinary boundaries in order to address contemporary challenges, and proposes landscape as a means of engaging past knowledge while supporting the construction of diverse and environmentally conscious futures.

Rebeca Blanco-Rotea (Vigo, 1973) is an archaeologist specialising in landscape and architecture. She is a Assistant Researcher at the Laboratory of Landscapes, Heritage and Territory (Lab2PT) at the University of Minho (Portugal) and at IN2PAST — the Associated Laboratory for Research and Innovation in Heritage, Arts, Sustainability and Territory. Trained in art history and archaeology, she holds a PhD in archaeology from the University of the Basque Country (2017). Her research focuses on historic architecture, cultural landscapes, and the socialisation and management of heritage. She has held research posts at the University of Santiago de Compostela and at the CSIC in Spain. She has coordinated the Heritage and Cultural Assets Section of the Galician Council for Culture (Spain).

Marta Labastida (Barcelona, 1972) is an architect and landscape architect with a PhD in Architecture. She teaches at the School of Architecture, Art and Design at the University of Minho, where she coordinates courses on territory, landscape, and public space. A researcher at Lab2PT and IN2PAST, her work focuses on landscape as an operative tool for territorial planning and resilience. She has also been involved in editorial, academic, and professional initiatives in architecture and landscape

Ana Isabel Queiroz is Assistant Professor in the Department of Geography and Regional Planning at NOVA University Lisbon (NOVA FCSH), and researcher in the Institute of Contemporary History (IHC) and in the In2Past -  Associate Laboratory for Research and Innovation in Heritage, Arts, Sustainability and Territory . With a background in biology, ethology, and landscape architecture, she works at the intersection of environmental humanities, history, and socio-ecological systems. Her research addresses landscape, land use, and sustainability, and she has published widely on environmental history.
