Football and Belonging

South American Migrant Teams in Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro

Stephanie Schütze | Julia Hass

Social Science / Sociology / General

This book analyses the creation of football teams and leagues by Latin American migrants and the transcultural and gendered negotiations of belonging in migrant amateur football spaces in Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Football is an important space for Latin American migrants to come together culturally and socially, expressing a sense of belonging to the same nation, region or even locality of origin. The appropriation of space for football is also important as a transcultural strategy: migrants integrate themselves into everyday Brazilian culture and express their affiliation to the country of arrival, as amateur football is a widespread and popular sport in Brazil.

Stephanie Schütze is a Cultural and Social Anthropologist at the Institute for Latin American Studies of Freie Universität Berlin, Germany.
