This book challenges the traditional view of censorship in academia. Universities are often idealised as bastions of free thought, under siege from external forces such as political agendas, corporate interests and culture wars. However, this perspective overlooks the censoring mechanisms that operate within academic institutions themselves.
Ewa Majewska urges us to rethink the role of university communities - both staff and students - in perpetuating restrictions on freedom of speech, research and publication. She highlights how internal dynamics such as precarity, commodification, discrimination and harassment function as forms of censorship. These are not isolated issues but are deeply rooted in broader trends such as the rise of far-right politics, neoliberal corporate models and enduring colonial legacies.
 
For universities to truly be spaces of scientific innovation, intellectual inspiration, and collaborative growth, they must confront and address both the external and internal forces that limit academic freedom.

Ewa Majewska is a feminist theorist of culture and Associate Professor at SWPS University, Poland. Her publications include Feminist Antifascism (2021) and articles in Jacobin. In 2023 she received the Emma Goldman Award from the Flex Foundation for her research on equality.
