Sustainable Pavement Materials and Rheological Performance

An Environmentally Friendly Approach

Amin Chegenizadeh | Hamid Nikraz

Science / Environmental Science

This book takes a clear and practical look at how sustainable materials and rheological concepts are influencing the way modern asphalt pavements are designed and evaluated. It brings together circular-economy thinking, the use of recycled and waste-derived materials, and advanced binder characterisation using Dynamic Shear Rheology (DSR). The chapters discuss a range of emerging, environmentally friendly solutions, including the reuse of construction and demolition waste, the stormwater and pollution-reduction benefits of pervious pavements, and the rheological performance of asphalt binders modified with recycled LDPE, crumb rubber, fly ash mastics, and lignosulfonate-based biomaterials. By connecting laboratory testing with mechanistic performance indicators and real-world engineering practice, the book offers a practical and integrated guide to designing more sustainable pavement materials. It is written for researchers, graduate students, consultants, transport agencies, and policy makers who are working toward more environmentally responsible and high-performing road infrastructure.

Dr Amin Chegenizadeh is an Associate Professor in Civil and Geotechnical/Pavement Engineering with a strong focus on sustainable infrastructure materials and ground improvement techniques. His research explores the performance of construction materials, particularly in pavement and soil stabilization, with an emphasis on balancing mechanical performance and environmental sustainability.

Dr Hamid Nikraz is an Emeritus Professor at Curtin University. Over the past 30 years of involvement in research at Curtin University, he has made significant efforts to attract high-quality students and advance strategic research and development initiatives.
