AI in Action for Transformative Pathways in STEM Teaching and Learning

Filiz Mumcu | Sahin Gokcearslan | Zsolt Lavicza

Education / General

This book addresses the transformative role of artificial intelligence in STEM teaching and learning, moving beyond the long-standing debate over "technology" in education to frame AI as a profound paradigm shift. It provides a comprehensive examination of how AI-powered systems, from chatbots and adaptive simulations to intelligent tutoring platforms, are redefining the nature of learning itself, including how knowledge is produced, validated, and pursued in pursuit of educational equity. Structured around four thematic pillars: Future Directions and Interdisciplinarity; Ethical Use and Philosophical Perspectives; Teacher Readiness and Education, and AI-Integrated Learning Environments, this volume brings together global research and practical case studies to bridge theory and classroom application.

The work specifically addresses critical gaps in existing literature, such as the predominance of short-term, small-scale studies and the lack of interdisciplinary applications. By exploring AI as a cognitive partner, a pedagogical catalyst, and an ecosystem architect, the work demonstrates that AI literacy must become integral to STEM education. It further emphasizes that ethical sensitivity regarding algorithmic bias, data privacy, and environmental sustainability, alongside computational thinking skills such as abstraction, are essential for responsible integration. Ultimately, this book provides a comprehensive roadmap for preparing learners not just to navigate but to critically question, collaborate with, and improve a complex, AI-augmented world.

Dr. Filiz Mumcu is an associate professor in Computer Education and Instructional Technology, specializing in digitalization in education, digital education, and the transformation of teaching and learning through emerging technologies. Her research explores how digital technologies redefine educational practices, teacher professional development, and learner engagement. She holds bachelor's degrees in Computer Engineering and Computer Science Education, along with an MSc and a PhD in Computer Education and Instructional Technology. Before academia, she spent nineteen years at the Grand National Assembly of Türkiye as a system analyst and education coordinator, gaining extensive experience at the intersection of technology, education, and institutional learning. She later served as a faculty member at Manisa Celal Bayar University. She was also a visiting scholar at Johannes Kepler University Linz, where she conducted postdoctoral research on integrating computational thinking into STEM education. Currently, she holds a postdoctoral researcher position in Digitalization in Early Childhood Education at the University of Graz. Her recent work focuses on AI, computational thinking, STEM education, and teacher training, emphasizing how emerging technologies can foster meaningful, equitable, and pedagogically grounded learning environments. Dr. Mumcu collaborates with national and international research groups, has authored numerous scholarly publications, and has contributed to various international projects.
