Fundamentals of Free Space and Deep Space Optical Communications

Models, Components, and Link Performance

Shun-Ping Chen

Technology & Engineering / Electrical

This book offers a comprehensive exploration of the fundamentals of free space and deep space optical communications, focusing on diverse applications, system components, and the challenges posed by real-world conditions such as atmospheric interference, clouds, and fog. It is an essential resource for those seeking to understand the intricacies of optical communication systems.

After the rapid development of wireless communication applications, such as satellite communications, radio and TV broadcasting, and mobile communications in the last decades, this book highlights the advantages of the new technologies Free Space Optical Communications (FSOC) and Deep Space Optical Communications (DSOC), including compact transmitters and receivers, reduced spacecraft weight, and smaller beam spot sizes. These benefits have driven international space agencies like NASA and ESA to pursue successful projects such as the Lunar Laser Communication Demonstration (LLCD) and NASA's Psyche Mission.

The book is tailored for a scientific audience, including research and development engineers and university students. It provides valuable insights into the future of space communications. As DSOC transitions from pilot research to a cornerstone of space communication, it serves as a vital guide for understanding its potential and applications.

Since 2008, Dr. Shun-Ping Chen is Professor of Communication Technologies and Networks at Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences, Germany. He studied Electrical Engineering at the Technical University of Braunschweig and received his Dr.-Ing. degree with a focus on Optoelectronic Integration. He held research, development, and management positions at Forschungsgesellschaft für Informationstechnik m.b.H. (F.I.T.), Research Center of Fuba and E-Plus (now O2 Telefónica), where he was responsible for transport network planning and initiated a fiber-optic backbone project. Later, he served as CTO and IT Director in various industries from 2003 to 2008. He also served as Director of the Institute of Communication Technologies (2015–2023), and has been a visiting researcher at institutions including Deutsche Telekom, Nokia Bell Labs, and ESA.
