History / Africa / General

This book is about the Ethiopian role in the maintenance of peace and security in Africa. Offering a history of Ethiopia’s peacekeeping missions, the work examines the changes and continuities in the peacekeeping tradition and the achievements and challenges encountered along the way. The author presents a historical background of the Ethiopian military and diplomatic standing and its contributions to collective security. Topics covered include The Congo, which was the first Ethiopian peacekeeping operation, and later missions in Rwanda, Burundi, Liberia. The final chapter examines the rationale of Ethiopian commitment to the maintenance of peace and security; problems and achievements of Ethiopian participation in peacekeeping missions from 1960 to 2010; and the UN financial reimbursements for the Ethiopian peacekeeping operations. The author also presents the benefits of Ethiopian engagements in peacekeeping missions.

The book is relevant for those experts and readers who have an interest in military diplomacy, history, peacekeeping, and multilateral and bilateral foreign relations. This book will also be of interest to historians who work on the history of UN peacekeeping in Africa as well as for those studying the diplomacy and military history of Ethiopia. In addition, policy makers working in peacekeeping and international organizations such as the United Nations and the African Union may find this book of use.
