Data Assimilation for Atmospheric, Oceanic and Hydrologic Applications (Vol. V)

Seon Ki Park | Liang Xu

Science / Environmental Science

This book presents the latest progress in data assimilation in meteorology, oceanography, and hydrology, including the land surface. It spans both theoretical and applied aspects, using various methodologies such as variational, Kalman filter, ensemble, Monte Carlo, and artificial intelligence methods. Besides data assimilation, other important topics are also covered, including targeting observation, sensitivity analysis, parameter estimation, and AI applications. The book will be useful to individual researchers and graduate students as a reference in the field of data assimilation.

Seon Ki Park is Professor of Climate and Energy Systems Engineering and Founding Director of the Severe Storm Research Center and the Center for Climate/Environment Change Prediction Research at Ewha Womans University, Seoul, Korea. He obtained a Ph.D. in Meteorology from the University of Oklahoma and M.S. and  B.S. degrees in Meteorology from Seoul National University. His research focuses on storm- and meso-scale meteorology, hydrometeorology, regional climate and environment, parameter optimization, and data assimilation to improve numerical weather/climate/environment prediction.

Liang Xu is an ARSAE (Advanced Research Scientists and Engineers) and Head of the Environmental Processes and Modeling Branch at the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory's Marine Meteorology Division in Monterey, California. He earned his Ph.D. in Atmospheric Sciences with a minor in Oceanography from North Carolina State University.  For over three decades, he has played a key role in developing Navy environmental prediction systems.
