Professor Marieta Dumitrache, MD, PhD, is a distinguished academic ophthalmologist with a career spanning more than 50 years. Throughout her academic career, she has authored over 40 book chapters and more than 60 scientific papers published or presented at national and international meetings.

Dr. Dumitrache single-handedly edited the only comprehensive ophthalmology textbook in Romania, a landmark work that has undergone multiple editions over the past 30 years. Generations of Romanian ophthalmologists have relied on this textbook both for specialty board preparation and daily clinical practice.

In addition, she has edited more than 25 volumes in clinical ophthalmology, including the core ophthalmology textbook currently used by trainees preparing for specialty examinations. Her scholarly work has often focused on subjects less represented in the medical literature, including pediatric ophthalmology and neuro-ophthalmology.

Two of her major works received prestigious academic recognition in Romania: the Academy of Medical Sciences Book Award in 2011 and the Romanian Academy Award in 2016, both for contributions to the field of ocular emergencies.

Her academic activity also includes publications in high-impact journals in the United States, the United Kingdom, and India. She has collaborated extensively with academic ophthalmologists in Romania and internationally and has supervised more than 20 PhD candidates, all of whom successfully completed their doctoral research and contributed to scientific publications or clinical implementation of their work.

Dr. Dumitrache served as Chair of the Department of Ophthalmology from 1986 to 2011, significantly contributing to its development through the expansion of faculty and clinical services. Dedicated to improving patient outcomes, she consistently promoted access to high-quality clinical care.

An accomplished surgeon, she has performed tens of thousands of surgeries throughout her career and has mentored generations of trainees who have gone on to become highly respected ophthalmologists.

Over more than five decades, Professor Dumitrache has made major contributions to the advancement of ophthalmology in Romania and internationally through a lifelong commitment to clinical excellence, scientific research, and medical education.

In June 2024, Professor Marieta Dumitrache was elected Honorary Member of the Academy of Medical Sciences of Romania in recognition of her outstanding scientific and professional achievements.
