Dr. Hwang is an Associate Professor in the Department of Preventive & Restorative Sciences. He has a unique career in the field of dental bioengineering research. He received both his B.S. in Chemical Engineering and Ph.D. in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering from Yonsei University. He enhanced his academic and technical skills in Environmental Engineering and Oral Microbiology with post-doctoral fellowships at the University of Alberta and the University of Rochester Medical Center. Since he joined Penn Dental Medicine, his research has aimed to introduce new paradigms in oral health research by applying engineering concepts and methods to advance our understanding of the pathogenesis of various biofilm-derived oral infectious diseases and developing therapeutic approaches. He has published extensively in the related research by integrating engineering, microbiology, and biochemical methodologies. These efforts have resulted in numerous groundbreaking inventions, including nonbiocidal therapeutic strategies against hypervirulent bacterial-fungal biofilms, a self-powering smart dental implant system to prevent peri-implant disease via a nonpharmacologic host modulatory approach, energy-harvestable anti-adhesive composite materials, a novel ex vivo saliva-derived microcosm biofilm model, and hydroxyapatite-based tooth models engineered to replicate both natural anatomy and restorative materials. These research projects represent a pivotal step in his continuous endeavor to address oral health challenges.
