This volume distinguishes itself by focusing specifically on biofilm-associated infections within the context of the infectious microenvironment. Rather than providing a general overview, it integrates host–pathogen interactions, polymicrobial complexity, and microenvironmental heterogeneity to frame biofilms as dynamic drivers of chronic and treatment-refractory disease.
Interest in the biofilm mode of microbial growth has evolved into a central paradigm in infection biology. Since the concept was introduced by J. William Costerton and later recognized by the American Society for Microbiology as a distinct mode of growth, the field has expanded substantially, with numerous books addressing biofilm structure, physiology, and antimicrobial tolerance.
Authored by leading experts, the book provides a critical and up-to-date synthesis of biofilm involvement across diverse clinical settings, while highlighting emerging diagnostic and therapeutic strategies. It is intended for researchers and clinicians seeking a mechanistic and translational perspective on biofilm infections within modern biomedical science.
Kendra Rumbaugh is a professor in the Department of Surgery and the Director of the Burn Center of Research Excellence at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center. She received her PhD in Medical Microbiology from TTUHSC and performed postdoctoral training at the University of California at San Francisco, both in the area of bacterial pathogenesis. Dr. Rumbaugh’s translational research focuses on understanding and treating wound infections, and she is especially interested in how biofilms, polymicrobial interactions and cell-to-cell signalling contribute to infection.
Thomas Bjarnsholt is professor in Biofilms and chronic infections and a specialist in Infection Medicine at the University of Copenhagen. His work is focusing on bacterial, viral and fungal biofilms in chronic and acute infections with more than 220 peer-reviewed publications. He is a member of the Global Wound Biofilm Expert Panel, and is among the most cited researchers in the world according to the list based on Web of Science and the number 1 biofilm researcher worldwide according to ExpertScape.
