LeMoyne College Goodwill Ambassadors Interracial Debating in an Era of Segregation

Elton H. Weaver III | Aram Goudsouzian

History / United States / 20th Century

This book examines the history of the LeMoyne College Goodwill Ambassadors, an all-Black intercollegiate debate team at Memphis's only HBCU that debated with and defeated teams from prestigious and internationally during segregation. Going beyond a history of a single team, the book addresses the political role of HBCUs in the pre-civil rights movement, the role of debate clubs in Black education and race relations, and white reactions to educated African Americans nationally and internationally at the time.
Elton H. Weaver III is Assistant Professor Teaching at The University of Memphis, USA.
