Advanced Distillation Technologies

Design, Control and Applications

Technology & Engineering / Environmental / General

Distillation has historically been the dominant method for separating mixtures in the chemical process industry. Despite its flexibility and widespread use, it remains energy-intensive. Yet, it is irreplaceable and set to remain the separation technology of choice for decades ahead. Meeting the demands of an energy-conscious, sustainability-driven society requires radical innovation: not just incremental optimization, but transformative new concepts and integrated process designs.

Advanced Distillation Technologies (2nd Edition) provides the reader with a deep and broad insight into advanced intensified separations, covering both well-established and emerging technologies from conceptual design through to practical implementation. This fully revised and expanded edition includes:

  • Fundamentals of distillation (thermodynamics, VLE, distillation column analysis)
  • Design and control of distillation (optimization, heat integration, and multivariable control)
  • Economic and sustainability assessment (cost estimation, LCA, sustainability metrics)
  • Azeotropic fluid separations (azeotropic, extractive, and pressure-swing distillation)
  • Reactive distillation (design, modeling, equipment, feasibility, and advanced RD variants)
  • Dividing-wall column (configurations, design, control, and multi-product applications)
  • Heat pump assisted distillation (all major heat pump types and a selection scheme)
  • Heat-integrated distillation column (HIDiC design, construction options, and retrofit)
  • Cyclic distillation (equipment, modeling, design algorithms, and industrial applications)
  • High-gravity (HiGee) distillation (rotating packed-bed equipment, modeling, industrial use)
  • Membrane-based distillation (membrane & osmotic distillation, pervaporation)
  • Special distillation processes (short-path, solar, microwave-/ultrasound-assisted distillation)

Containing abundant examples and industrial case studies, this 2nd edition provides a unique and comprehensive resource tackling the most advanced distillation technologies, effectively integrating sustainability assessment, process intensification, and novel energy-efficient approaches for the modern chemical engineer.
