Dimensions of Animation engages with animation in the experimental areas of cultural production and practice of art, theatre, and performance, bringing together artists and animation practitioners, software developers, and animation studies scholars.

Animation as an art form, production technique, and cultural practice has been affected strongly by the developments in digital technology, having spread from the established fields of animation film and series into the breadth of visual image production. In particular, the worlds of art, theater, and performance, as well as the sciences, have become areas for animation to explore space in new artistic and aesthetic forms and through new technologies and techniques. This provides unique experiences of real and virtual animated spaces.

Ultimately, Dimensions of Animation offers interdisciplinary insights into the evolving fields of artistic practices and of art-based and practice-based research methods in animation studies. It conceives animation as a field to further communication between the various approaches and disciplines and encourages discussion between animation and art, sciences, technology, and academic research.

Juergen Hagler is Professor of Computer Animation and Media Studies and the head of studies of the bachelor's and master's Digital Arts program at the University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria, Hagenberg Campus.
