The best social studies educators do not only teach the rights and responsibilities of citizens. They also teach habits of civil discourse and critical thinking. In addition, they help students examine the principles that uphold our civic life, as well as the tensions that frequently disrupt it. Our book explains how teachers do this critical work.

David Tucker began working with high school teachers in the early 1990s, teaching seminars in American history.
