Missing and Murdered

Seeking Justice for Indigenous Women One Case at a Time

Faith Phillips

True Crime / Abductions, Kidnappings & Missing Persons

An emotional reckoning with how the American justice system fails Indigenous women through the stories and investigations of eight of these missing and murdered women.

Native women face a murder rate ten times higher than the national average. The terrifying reality is that murder is the third leading cause of death among Native women between the ages of 10 and 24 in the United States, a dire situation that calls for immediate action. How do we begin to tackle this and reverse the horrifying trend of missing and murdered Indigenous women?

Missing and Murdered: Seeking Justice for Indigenous Women One Case at a Time
is a necessary and illuminating exploration of eight unsolved cases of indigenous women who disappeared in North America. Faith Phillips, a Cherokee writer, travels to each of the eight tribes across North America to document the crimes, share the intimate grief of families who continue to search for their missing women, and coordinate resources between state, tribal, and federal governments to demand answers, once and for all. Phillips further chronicles the historical violence against the Native nations where the crimes occurred to paint a painful image of how Native people have suffered.

In Cherokee culture, women are considered sacred beings. It is said when we lose a woman, any woman, we lose our selves. Missing and Murdered highlights the depths of injustice experience by native women with authenticity, urgency, and passion. The stories of these women must be told and deserved to be solved. This is an essential read for any true crime fans interested in making a genuine difference and committed to helping to bring these women home.

Faith Phillips, a citizen of the Cherokee Nation, is an author, screenwriter, and producer. She is the author of several books including, Now I Lay Me Down (2018); and she is the writer and executive producer of the docuseries The Girl Scout Murders (2022). Phillips lives with her family on the Cherokee reservation in the Ozark foothills.
