Dr. Kiran Vijayan is an Associate Professor in the Department of Ocean Engineering and Naval Architecture at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur, India. He received his B.Tech. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Calicut, his M.S. in Ocean Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology Madras, and his Ph.D. in Engineering from the University of Cambridge, UK. Following his doctoral studies, he worked as a Postdoctoral Research Associate at Swansea University, UK, on an EPSRC-funded collaborative project on Engineering Nonlinearity involving five UK universities and eight industrial partners. He also gained industrial experience at General Electric, Bengaluru, where he worked on the design and analysis of wind turbine systems. His research interests include structural dynamics, inverse problems, rotordynamics, vibro-acoustics, smart structures, fluid–structure interactions, nonlinear dynamics, and marine structural systems. His research combines theoretical, computational, and experimental approaches to address engineering challenges in marine and mechanical systems. Dr. Vijayan serves on the Editorial Board of Scientific Reports (Nature Portfolio, Springer Nature) and the International Journal of Noise and Vibration Worldwide. He has also served as a reviewer for numerous leading international journals. In recognition of his research contributions, he received the Outstanding Researcher Award from the Venus International Foundation in 2022.
Dr. Ritwik Ghoshal is an Assistant Professor Department of Ocean Engineering and Naval Architecture Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur. He obtained his B.E (Civil) from Bengal Engineering and Science University (Presently IIEST Shibpur), M.Tech in Ocean Engineering & Naval Architecture from the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur and Ph.D in Department of Civil Engineering (Emphasis: Structural Engineering) from the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur. He was a post-doctoral Research Fellow in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, National University of Singapore (NUS). He worked in Keppel-NUS Corporate Laboratory to develop a new methodology for designing economic station-keeping systems for Arctic Floaters in harsh environments. During his doctoral research he worked on developing mitigation strategies of high-intensity shock loading on structures using marine grade sandwich panels. His research works have been presented in various international conferences and published in leading peer-reviewed journals and conference proceedings.
Dr. Swapnadip De Chowdhury is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Ocean Engineering and Naval Architecture at IIT Kharagpur. His main area of research is in the numerical modelling of wave structure interaction applied to coastal, offshore and seakeeping engineering. He is currently involved in projects on two phase flow modelling, wave energy and violent wave breaking. He has published papers in reputed journals and conference proceedings in Ocean Engineering and secured projects from both national and international funding schemes. He is actively engaged in developing curated training modules for industrial partners in Coastal Engineering. He teaches mainly courses on Marine Hydrodynamics and Ocean Renewables at IIT Kharagpur.
Dr. K.L. Vasudev is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Ocean Engineering and Naval Architecture at IIT Kharagpur. He earned his Ph.D. from IIT Madras in 2016, with a thesis on hydrodynamic optimization of underwater vehicles using genetic algorithms integrated with CFD, and holds a dual B.Tech/M.Tech degree from St. Petersburg State Marine Technical University, Russia (2004–2010), where he graduated with a perfect CGPA of 5/5 and secured university gold medal. His research centres on developing optimisation frameworks for autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) and submarines by integrating Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) with Genetic Algorithms, and also extends to ship design, manoeuvring, control, and marine hydrodynamics. He has authored 18 journal publications in international journals, namely, Applied Ocean Research, Ships and Offshore Structures, the Journal of Methods in Oceanography, and Internet of Things (Elsevier), 13 international conference proceedings. His work has been recognized with a patent for a system converting water wave energy to electrical energy (filed 2023), a Best Paper Presentation Award from the International Conference on Energy and Materials Technology, and the Young Research Faculty Award from Venus International (2015), and he has served as Session Chair at IEEE/MTS OCEANS'14 in Taipei. As Principal Investigator, he has led sponsored projects from DRDO-NPOL, MOES-NIOT and several consultancy projects from Industries relevant to marine and ship design. Beyond research, he teaches courses in manoeuvring and control, ship resistance, fluid mechanics, and computational engineering.
Dr Mainak Chakraborty is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Ocean Engineering and Naval Architecture at the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur. He holds an MS and PhD in Ocean Engineering from IIT Madras and a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from IIEST Shibpur. His research interests include coastal hydrodynamics, sediment transport and resuspension, ship-generated waves, storm surge and coastal inundation, morphodynamic modelling, inland waterways, and port, harbour and coastal structural systems. His work combines field investigations, physical experiments, numerical modelling, and engineering consultancy, with research contributions published in leading journals including Ocean Engineering and Applied Ocean Research. He is also actively involved in sponsored research, consultancy projects, academic administration, and the development of coastal and maritime engineering infrastructure in IIT Kharagpur.
