This book offers a comprehensive, clinically grounded roadmap for understanding and treating chronic and complex pain conditions. Drawing on five decades of specialist experience, the Author distills contemporary pain science into a structured, accessible resource that guides readers through the mechanisms of pain, the factors that cause it to persist, and the principles behind effective management. The book balances scientific rigor with clarity, ensuring that both health professionals and people living with pain can engage fully with its explanations, frameworks, and applications.
The book’s distinctive strength lies in its practical, multidisciplinary orientation. It maps out the full ecosystem of modern pain care—from individual practitioners to fully integrated pain centres—and explains the roles of pain physicians, psychologists, psychiatrists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, nurses, social workers, and addiction specialists. Each chapter includes real clinical cases that demonstrate what successful (and unsuccessful) treatment journeys look like in practice, translating theory into strategies that can be applied in everyday clinical encounters or patient self‑management.
Designed to fill a long‑standing gap in accessible, evidence‑based pain education, Managing Pain - Understanding Chronic and Cancer Pain for Healthcare Providers and Patients equips readers with the tools to improve understanding, communication, and outcomes. It offers actionable guidance on medication use, non‑pharmacological interventions, neuromodulation, behavioural approaches, and functional restoration, while clearly addressing common misconceptions that hinder recovery. Above all, the book fosters a compassionate, realistic perspective—one that validates the lived experience of pain and emphasises shared responsibility, teamwork, and hope as foundations for sustainable, patient‑centred care.
Professor S. Raj Sundaraj is a retired anaesthetist and pain physician with more than five decades of clinical experience, predominantly in the field of Pain Medicine. He began his medical career in anaesthesiology, where he spent nearly a decade translating research in post-operative acute pain into clinical practice. His professional focus evolved as he increasingly encountered patients with severe chronic pain who had no clear pathology or further surgical options, prompting him to pursue advanced training and collaboration with leading international experts in pain medicine.
He went on to establish a pioneering multidisciplinary pain management centre within a major tertiary hospital affiliated with the University of Sydney. The centre was accredited by the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA) as a training facility for pain medicine fellows and attracted trainees from Australia, New Zealand, and across Asia. Alongside this, he developed a private multidisciplinary practice, leading teams that included specialists in anaesthesia, psychiatry, rehabilitation, and addiction medicine, supported by fellows, allied health professionals, and nursing staff. His contributions were recognised by the University of Sydney, which conferred upon him the academic title of Associate Professor in Pain Medicine. He also contributed extensively to education and training, including serving as an examiner for pain medicine fellowship examinations in Australia and internationally, including in Europe, and delivering workshops and lectures across Asia over more than a decade.
Over a 52-year medical career, including 40 years as an ANZCA-accredited pain specialist, Professor Sundaraj has dedicated his work to improving the lives of patients with complex and persistent pain. Since retiring from clinical practice in 2023, he has focused on writing to share his clinical insights and experience. His work aims to support clinicians, particularly general practitioners managing multifaceted pain conditions, while also offering understanding and reassurance to patients and their families. Through his writing, he advocates for a compassionate, multidisciplinary, and systems-informed approach to chronic pain, emphasising improved understanding, coordinated care, and better quality of life.
