Patent Strategy-Oriented Technology Opportunity Mining and Innovation Design

Hui Li

Technology & Engineering / Industrial Design / General

This book establishes a systematic framework for integrating patent strategy with technology opportunity mining and innovation design, offering a breakthrough methodology that bridges patent analytics, technological evolution, and practical design processes. Unlike fragmented approaches, it decodes technological trends from patent big data, enabling readers to identify high-value R&D directions, optimize patent portfolios, and avoid duplication in innovation cycles. Structured into ten chapters, the content progresses from foundational concepts to advanced models such as a patent panorama-based maturity analysis model, a system evolution-driven product design space model, and a five-flow model for obstacle patent resolution, with real-world applications demonstrated through a case study of vascular interventional robotics. Targeting innovation managers, patent engineers, and researchers, this book stands out for its holistic methodology linking strategic planning, data-driven mining, and design execution; practical toolkits including six proprietary analytical models with step-by-step guidance; and application-driven insights for reducing R&D cycles, avoiding patent conflicts, and enhancing intellectual property value in manufacturing. By addressing the complexity of patent strategy and technology opportunity mining, this book fills a critical gap in current literature, serving as both an academic reference and a hands-on guide for translating patent information into competitive innovation strategies.

Li Hui, PhD, Associate Professor of School of Mechanical Engineering, University of Science and Technology Beijing, Part- Researcher of National Engineering Research Center of Technological Innovation Methods and Tools, Master's Supervisor.

Her research directions are Innovation Design, Patent Avoidance and Layout Design. Prof. Li hosted eight projects including the National Key Research and Development Program, National Natural Science Foundation, Natural Science Foundation of Hebei Province, Beijing-Tianjin-Hebe Joint Fund, etc.; participated in six scientific research projects including the Special Project of Innovation Methods; won three provincial and ministerial level awards.

Tan Runhua, Doctor (Zhejiang University Mechanical Department), Foreign Academician of National Academy of Engineering of Ukraine, Foreign Academician of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences, Founder, Life Honorary Director, Professor, and Doctoral Supervisor of the National Engineering Research Center for the Methods and Implementing Tools of National Technological Innovation. He is also the Vice President of the Research Society of Innovation Methods and the President of the TRI Research Society. He has served as the Vice President of Hebei University of Technology, a member of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, and government consultant for Hebei Province.

He was one of the first scholars to introduce TRIZ into the country. Based on the practice of promoting and applying TRIZ domestic enterprises, he created the C-TRIZ theory for solving the invention process. He has presided over and completed several projects such as the National Supporting Plan, the 63 Plan, the Special Work on Innovation Methods, and the National Natural Science Foundation. He has won the first prize in scientific and technological progress in Hebei Province and other awards. In 2016, he received the international award "Archimedes Medal" in the field of TRIZ.

He has published 20 on innovation methods, applied for more than 100 patents, and published more than 500 papers. He created the "Innovative Engineer - Invention" model in batches. Prof.Tan transferred the methods of technological innovation to more than 2000 enterprises and trained more than 10,000 innovative engineers, applied for a number of invention patents, and created a number of new technologies, new processes, and new products.
