The volume highlights how Nature-based Solutions (NbS) offer transformative, resilient, and multi-functional strategies for managing water scarcity, addressing quality deterioration, ecosystem degradation, and climate-related risks.

Organised around five key themes, the book dwells upon emerging practices in eco-centric used water and faecal sludge management; restoration of urban water bodies and wetlands; groundwater recharge in depleted areas through managed aquifer recharge and rainwater harvesting; nature-led approaches for water quality enhancement; and sustainable strategies for urban flood and stormwater management. This work brings together the contributions made by the eminent researchers, academicians, practitioners and policy makers. These contributions demonstrate how NbS not only takes the journey towards water sustainability forward but also enhances biodiversity, climate resilience, and community well-being. Drawing on contributions from diverse geographic and institutional contexts, the book brings together interdisciplinary perspectives that span water resource engineering, hydrogeology, environmental sciences, ecology, urban planning, public policy and community participation. It showcases real-world applications, technical innovations, and policy frameworks that demonstrate the potential of NBS in advancing circular water management and sustainability goals.

Dr. Dipankar Saha is currently serving as Chair Professor at MRIIRS, Faridabad. After obtaining his M.Sc. In Geology, with a specialisation in Hydrogeology, from the Calcutta University, he joined the Central Ground Water Board through the Union Public Service Commission and served for three and a half decades in various capacities. He superannuated as a Member (Headquarters) of the Central Ground Water Board (CGWB) and also served as Member Secretary, Central Ground Water Authority (CGWA) and Head of the Rajiv Gandhi National Ground Water Training and Research Institute (RGNGWTRI), Government of India, Raipur. Dr Saha was awarded his Ph.D. in groundwater management from the Indian Institute of Rechnology-Indian School of Mines (IIT-ISM), Dhanbad. He received a postgraduate diploma from the Indian Institute of Remote Sensing (IIRS), Dehradun, and specialised training at the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), Bangkok, and JICA, Tokyo. He published more than 70 papers in peer-reviewed journals and edited three books published by Springer, covering various facets of water resources investigation, assessment, management and policy. He also spearheaded the National Aquifer Mapping Programme and assessment of groundwater resources across India during his tenure as a Member of the CGWB.

Harshvardhan is currently the Chief Executive Officer of the Consortium for DEWATS Dissemination (CDD) India, Bengaluru. He holds a postgraduate degree in Rural Management from the Institute of Rural Management Anand (IRMA) and a bachelor's degree from the University of Delhi. He has over 20 years of experience in designing and implementing large-scale development programmes, with a focus on sustainable water and sanitation management, natural resource governance, and rural livelihoods. At CDD India, he leads work focused on the application of nature-based solutions in decentralised used water management, faecal sludge treatment, water resource management and climate-resilient infrastructure. He has actively contributed to policy development efforts at both national and state levels and has collaborated with multiple stakeholders, including governments, civil society organisations, and international agencies.

Publication Date:

21 November 2026

Publisher:

Springer Nature Singapore

Imprint:

Springer

ISBN-13:

9789819247639

Format:

Hardback
