This book presents the proceedings of the 8th National Conference on Multidisciplinary Design, Analysis and Optimization (NCMDAO 2025), providing a collection of contemporary research advancing the field of multidisciplinary design optimization (MDO). The book showcases innovative methodologies and practical applications that bridge classical optimization techniques with emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, quantum computing, digital twins, and data-driven optimization.
The volume covers a diverse range of topics, including structural optimization, metamaterials, multi-scale and multi-physics modeling, additive manufacturing, surrogate modeling, Bayesian and evolutionary optimization, uncertainty quantification, reliability-based design, and machine learning for optimization. It further highlights real-world applications in aerospace, manufacturing, biomedical engineering, and other engineering domains, featuring studies on aircraft structures, lattice and origami-inspired metamaterials, compliant mechanisms, and advanced computational design frameworks.
Organized into thematic sections, the book provides readers with both theoretical developments and application-oriented case studies, offering a balanced perspective on current trends and future directions in MDO.
This volume serves as a valuable resource for researchers, graduate students, practicing engineers, and professionals from academia, government research laboratories, and industry who are interested in design optimization, computational engineering, advanced manufacturing, and the development of next-generation engineering systems.
Sourav Rakshit is currently an Associate Professor at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras where he joined in 2014. He completed his master's and obtained his doctorate from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, and his undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering at Jadavpur University, Kolkata. Dr. Rakshit's research interests lie in topology optimization, dynamical systems and robotics. He works in multidisciplinary areas of topology optimization, such as biomechanics and thermo-fluid systems, and has published in reputable journals and conferences on these topics. He is an active member of National Multidisciplinary Design and Optimization group, the organizers of NCMDO and iNCMDAO.
Dr. Phanisri Pradeep Pratapa is an Associate Professor of Structural Engineering at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras. He got his B.Tech. degree from IIT Madras in 2010, and Masters degree from The University of Texas at Austin in 2011. After working for a while in the offshore oil & gas industry as a structural engineer, he went back to academics and obtained a PhD from Georgia Tech in 2016. He works on a variety of topics in structural engineering including deployable & foldable structures, structural optimization, lattice structures, metamaterials, and structural design of 3D printed concrete structures.
Dr. Vineet Vashista is an Associate Professor at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Gandhinagar, where he leads the Human-Centered Robotics (HCR) Laboratory. He obtained his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from Columbia University in 2015 and a Master’s in Mechanical Design from IIT Delhi in 2008. His research focuses on human-centered robotic technologies inspired by human motor adaptation, with applications in rehabilitation, wearable robotics, and performance augmentation. Supported by major national and international funding agencies, his work investigates neuro-musculoskeletal processes to design devices that measure and influence human movement. Dr. Vashista is a recipient of the Haryana Yuva Vigyan Ratna Award (2022) and a member of INYAS (2023).
