This book presents the select peer-reviewed proceedings of the 13th International Conference on Precision, Micro, Meso and Nano Engineering (COPEN 2024). It covers the latest research in the advanced and convectional manufacturing techniques such as micromachining, nanofinishing, microjoining, microforming, microforging, microcasting, additive microfabrication, high aspect ratio fabrication, lithography, LIGA, micro/nanometrology, micro- and nanosystem applications. It also covers the characterization techniques that are equally essential in micro and nano manufacturing, enabling researchers and engineers to assess the properties and quality of fabricated structures. The book further delves into the applications of micro and nano manufacturing in a wide range of industries such as electronics, telecommunications, healthcare, energy, semiconductor devices, advanced sensors and high-density data storage solutions. The book will be highly useful for researchers and professionals in the area of industrial and production engineering.
Dr. Bijoy Bhattacharyya was a professor in the Department of Production Engineering, Jadavpur University, Kolkata. He joined the institute in 1991 as a Lecturer in the Department of Production Engineering. He obtained his B.E. (1983) from REC, Calicut, and his M.E. (1985) and Ph.D. (1991) from Jadavpur University, Kolkata. His major areas of research interest include non-traditional machining (NTM) processes, micro-machining, machine tool systems, and production management. Dr. Bhattacharyya has published several high-impact research articles in reputed international journals. He has also authored several book chapters. He is the principal investigator in several projects funded by AR & DB, DST-SERB, BARC, UGC, and AICTE.
Dr. J. Ramkumar is currently a HAG (Higher Administrative Grade) Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur, a position he has held since 2022. He joined the institute as an Assistant Professor in 2003. Dr. Ramkumar obtained his B.Tech from the National Institute of Technology, Trichy, and both his M.Tech and Ph.D. from the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras. His academic journey is further distinguished by international research experience and professional training from prestigious institutions, including Osaka University, Japan (2015), the Fraunhofer Institute, Germany (2012), and the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, USA (2008). Dr. Ramkumar’s major areas of interest include micro/nano manufacturing, new product and process development, tribology, composites, and manufacturing process modeling. He has published numerous articles in reputable research journals and holds several national and international patents in the fields of micro/nano finishing, surface modification operations, and composites. He has been influential in developing tremendously accurate micro/nano machining processes which have been an integral part of current age defence systems in development of metamaterials for defence technology, Unmanned Air Vehicle, machining process for aerospace and missile parts such as the components and shells used in Man Portable Anti-Tank Guided Missile (MPATGM). Throughout his illustrious career, Dr. Ramkumar has received multiple prestigious recognitions, including being elected a Fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineering (INAE) (2022), receiving the IEI Young Engineers Award (2011), and the Young Scientist Award in the Engineering Science Division from the Indian Science Congress Association (2007).
Dr. Basil Kuriachen is serving as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, National Institute of Technology Calicut from 2020. His vivacity and dexterity towards abiding commitment to sublime work ethic conferred him with the Ph.D. and M. Tech degrees from NIT Calicut (2015) and Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam (2011), respectively. His resolute research niches are in the field of metal additive manufacturing, micro/nano-machining processes, precision and ultra-precision machining, modeling and analysis in the machining of “difficult to machine” materials, tribology of manufacturing processes, nano-tribology, surface coatings, nano-lubricants, advanced machining processes, friction stir welding & processing and surface characterization. He is the principal investigator (PI) for many currently active projects from DST-SERB, ARDB, DRDO, Govt. of India, UGC, DAE, TIH_IITG, SERB-IMPRINT and ISRO.
