Molecular Embryology of Angiosperms

Diego Hojsgaard | T. Pullaiah

Science / Life Sciences / Botany

This contributed volume presents a comprehensive account of reproductive and embryonic development in flowering plants. The volume brings together recent advances in molecular cytology, genomics, transcriptomics, and developmental biology to explain the mechanisms underlying seed formation and plant reproduction.
The book examines the molecular regulation of key developmental stages, including floral induction, gametophyte development, fertilization, embryogenesis, endosperm formation, and seed maturation. It also discusses emerging areas such as apomixis, polyembryony, polyploidy, and the impact of environmental and climatic factors on reproductive success. By connecting foundational embryological concepts with modern experimental approaches, the book offers both historical perspective and current scientific understanding. With its strong focus on developmental mechanisms and translational relevance, the book highlights how advances in plant embryology can support crop improvement, reproductive efficiency, and agricultural sustainability.

This book is designed for breeders, biotechnologists, geneticists, cell and molecular biologists, graduate and post-graduate students and investors associated with crop improvement in the public and private sectors. Scientists and students working with plant reproductive and embryonic developments will find this book an excellent guide and a source of inspiration for new ideas and future innovations in plant research.

Dr. D. Hojsgaard obtained his Ph.D. in Natural Resources (Botany) from the National University of the Northeast, Argentina (2010), followed by a postdoctoral fellowship at University of Vienna, Austria (2010-2011). He served as Assistant Professor at the University of Göttingen, Germany (2012-2018), with a subsequent postdoctoral appointment at the Leibniz Institute of Plant Genetics and Crop Plant Research (IPK), Germany (2023-2025). He currently holds a position as Guest Scientist in the Plant Reproductive Biology group at IPK-Gatersleben. He has held visiting professorships at the National University of Misiones, Argentina (2016, 2020-2021), and conducted research at Harvard University´s Arnold Arboretum (2016-2017). He was awarded a Milstein Fellowship in 2021.
His research addresses fundamental questions in plant reproductive biology, evolutionary genetics, and biotechnology, with emphasis on apomixis. Current investigations focus on manipulating seed development genes for biotechnological applications and elucidating mechanisms by which reproductive systems influence genetic variability during adaptation and speciation.

Dr. Hojsgaard has authored one book and edited three volumes. His publication record comprises 51 research articles and six book chapters. He serves or has served in editorial roles for international journals in plant genetics, molecular biology, and evolutionary biology, including positions as associate editor and editorial board member. Professional affiliations include the Argentinean Association of Genetics (SAG), International Association of Sexual Plant Reproduction Research (IASPRR), and the Network of Argentine scientists in Germany (RCAA).

Dr. T. Pullaiah is a former professor at the Department of Botany at Sri Krishnadevaraya University in Andhra Pradesh, India, where he has taught for more than 35 years. He has held several positions at the university, including Dean, Faculty of Biosciences, Head of the Department of Botany, Head of the Department of Biotechnology, and Member of Academic Senate. He was President of Indian Botanical Society (2014), President of the Indian Association for Angiosperm Taxonomy (2013), and Fellow of Andhra Pradesh Akademi of Sciences. He was awarded the Panchanan Maheshwari Gold Medal, the Prof. P. C. Trivedi Medal, the Dr. G. Panigrahi Memorial Lecture award of the Indian Botanical Society and Prof. Y. D. Tyagi Gold Medal of the Indian Association for Angiosperm Taxonomy, and a Best Teacher Award from Government of Andhra Pradesh. Under his guidance 54 students obtained their doctoral degrees. He has authored 75 books, edited 65 books, and published over 340 research papers. He maintains active editorial service across multiple peer-reviewed journals in plant biology, genetics, and evolution. He was also a member of Species Survival Commission of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Professor Pullaiah received his PhD from Andhra University, India, attended Moscow State University, Russia, and worked as Postdoctoral Fellow during 1976–1978.
