This book provides a systematic and comprehensive summary of typical technical issues involved in terminal structural design, based on the analysis of the structural characteristics of contemporary airport terminal buildings and combined with engineering practices. The content covers the formation of special sites, foundation and underground, main structure, roof structure, ancillary structures, curtain wall support structures and roof systems, and the renovation of existing terminal buildings. It also explores special issues such as rail transit induced vibration, anti-terrorism and blast resistance, and structural health monitoring. Finally, 12 terminal structural design projects that the author has led and participated in over the past 30 years were selected for in-depth case analysis. This book can serve as a reference for the design, research, and construction of terminal and transportation hub building structures. The basis of English translation of this book, originally in Chinese, was facilitated by artificial intelligence. The content was later revised by the author for accuracy.
Professor Jian Zhou received his B.E. degree in Structural Engineering in Tongji University in 1990 and has been working at East China Architectural Design and Research Institute Co., Ltd. ever since. In 2003 and 2004, he received a master's degree in Project Management from Manchester University Institute of Science and Technology and a master's degree in Civil and Architectural Engineering from Tongji University. He is the Chief Structural Engineer of East China Architectural Design and Research Institute, and a part-time professor at Tongji University. Professor Jian Zhou has been engaged in the design and research of large-span and super high-rise structures for a long time. He was responsible for completing the structural design of more than 20 airport terminals and more than 10 super high-rise buildings over 250 meters. His design focuses on pursuing the integration of structure and architecture. He has won over 80 design awards, including the China Excellent Engineering Survey and Design Award, the China Excellent Engineering Survey and Design Industry Award, the Structural Award of the Institution of Structural Engineers in the UK, and the CTBUH Excellence Award. He has led or participated in the completion of more than 10 scientific research projects in the field of structural engineering, published over 100 papers, and co authored more than 10 structural design standards's. In 2024, he was awarded the title of the first Shanghai Municipal Engineering Survey and Design Master.
