He also served as a guest professor at Churchill College of the University of Cambridge in 1997–1998; the president of  the University of the Air (currently the Open University of Japan) in 1998–2000; the president of the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) in 2000–2008; and the director general of the Center for Research and Development of the Japan Science and Technology Agency in 2008–2022.
