Shankar Das is a distinguished public health scholar and Professor at the School of Health Systems Studies, Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai. He has served as the Officiating Vice-Chancellor of the Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics, Pune, and previously held the position of Pro Vice-Chancellor at TISS. With over three decades of experience spanning academic leadership, health systems research, and policy engagement, Professor Das has made significant and sustained contributions to public health, health systems strengthening, social development, institutional capacity building, community-based interventions, and the advancement of health equity. His work is characterised by a strong integration of research, practice, and policy, with a particular emphasis on translating evidence into actionable frameworks for health system improvement.

He has an extensive publication record, with numerous articles in high-impact, peer-reviewed international and national journals. In addition, he has contributed chapters to edited volumes and authored and co-authored books published by leading and renowned academic publishers, reflecting both the depth and breadth of his scholarship. He has led and contributed to numerous national and international collaborations involving government ministries, global academic institutions, multilateral and bilateral development agencies, and grassroots organisations, thereby fostering cross-sectoral and interdisciplinary approaches to complex public health challenges. Professor Das’s editorial leadership is anchored in intellectual rigor, methodological robustness, and policy relevance.
