He did his Ph.D. in geography with a specialisation on regional development and planning from Utkal University, Bhubaneswar, Odisha, in 2001. He has been working for the last 34 years in the fields of research and teaching at the National Council for Education Research and Training (NCERT), New Delhi; the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS), Noida; Government of Chandigarh; and IGNOU, New Delhi. His research interests include population, environment and health geography, and he is currently involved in research on disaster and climate change with a special focus on vulnerability, adaptation, resilience and livelihood. In 2008, he was selected as a young researcher for a workshop conducted by the International Human Dimensions Programme on Global Environmental Change (IHDP) in Bonn, Germany.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-margin-top-alt: auto; mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; line-height: normal;\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 12.0pt; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif; mso-fareast-font-family: 'Times New Roman'; mso-fareast-language: EN-IN;\"\u003eDr. R. B. Singh was a professor and the head of the Department of Geography at the Delhi School of Economics, University of Delhi, Delhi, until February 2020. He is the first Indian and the second Asian elected secretary general and treasurer of the International Geographical Union (IGU). He was also the chair of the Research Council for Scientific and Industrial Research—Central Food Technological Research Institute (CSIR-CFTRI), Government of India, and a member of the International Science Council (ISC) Scientific Committee and elected as the president of the Earth System Science Section of the ISCA in 2019–2020. He has published 15 books, 35 edited volumes and more than 235 research papers. He has supervised 35 Ph.D. and 81 M. Phil students. After completing his undergraduate studies (B.A.) in geography and sociology from Ravenshaw University, Cuttack, he undertook postgraduate and research studies at the Centre for the Study of Regional Development, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, where he obtained his Ph.D. He is currently a Professor of Geography at Ravenshaw University Cuttack. He served at the Department of Geography, Gangadhar Meher University, Sambalpur, and the Department of Geography, B.R. Ambedkar College at the University of Delhi. He has been actively engaged in research and teaching in the areas of population, health and development. His research to date has involved the use of large-scale primary and secondary data.
