This book explores how diazotrophic plant growth-promoting microorganisms (DPGPMs) can support sustainable agriculture. These beneficial microbes help plants grow by naturally fixing nitrogen from the air, reducing the need for chemical fertilizers and improving soil health.
The chapters cover a wide range of topics. Early chapters explain the role of endophytic and free-living diazotrophs in crops like sugarcane and their molecular mechanisms for promoting plant growth. Several chapters focus on how these microbes can be used as biofertilizers and how they help plants cope with environmental stress. The book also discusses the use of nanotechnology to improve nitrogen use efficiency and the potential of microbial solutions to address climate change. Later chapters explore recent advances in nitrogen fixation, including its application in non-leguminous crops and the use of synthetic biology.
This book is a valuable resource for students, researchers, and professionals in agriculture, microbiology, and environmental sciences. It is also useful for policymakers and practitioners interested in eco-friendly farming practices and sustainable food production.
Dr. Rajesh Kumar Singh is currently the Principal Scientist and Head of Research & Development at Agromaxx Industry, India and Research Scientist at the Guangxi Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Nanning, China. He has previously worked as a Research Scientist focusing on sugarcane growth and soil fertility enhancement using diazotrophic bacteria. With over 15 years of experience in agricultural microbiology, he has led teams in developing biofertilizers and microbial solutions for crop productivity. He holds a master’s degree from Barkatullah University, Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, India, and a Ph.D. from Rani Durgawati University, Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, India, followed by postdoctoral research in China. His interests include nitrogen fixation, plant-microbe interactions, and microbial stress management. He has received multiple awards for scientific excellence and has contributed extensively to research publications and book chapters.
Dr. Pratiksha Singh is an Assistant Professor at School of Agriculture Science, LNCT University, Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, India. She has previously served as a Senior Researcher and Lecturer in Nanning, China. She earned her Ph.D. in Microbiology from Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana, Punjab, India, and completed two postdoctoral programs in China. She brings over 15 years of expertise in agriculture microbiology, with a strong research focus on diazotrophic plant growth–promoting microorganisms and their pivotal role in suppressing plant pathogens. She has published numerous high-quality research papers in this field. Her research focuses on biological nitrogen fixation, PGPR, endophytes, and molecular plant-microbe interactions. She has received several honours and has published widely in the field.
