The high cost of energy, coupled with environmental concerns and the  interest in sustainable agriculture, has stimulated research in  symbiotic nitrogen fixation. The development of modern genetic  techniques has resulted in interdisciplinary research on  plant-microbe interactions controlling nitrogen fixation.
