Much of the              research\nreported in this monograph is inspired by the work of              Michel\nSintzoff on formal program development; he contributed               an\nenlightening Foreword.\nDeva is essentially a typed functional        language with certain\ndeduction rules. The difference with ordinary         languages is,\nof course, the application domain: the types serve here       to\nexpress propositions such as specifications or programs,\nrather than just data classes. Its practical applicability\nwas tested on several        non-trivial case studies.
