The        identifying characteristic of hybrid systems\nis that they incorporate both  continuous components governed\nby differential equations and also digital   components -\ndigital computers, sensors, and actuators controlled           by\nprograms.\nThis volume of invited refereed papers is inspired by      a\nworkshop on the Theory of Hybrid Systems, held at the\nTechnical       University, Lyngby, Denmark, in October 1992, and\nby a prior Hybrid Systems Workshop, held at Cornell\nUniversity, USA, in June 1991, organized by R.L.  Grossman\nand A. Nerode.
