Thus, there is\nnot only a belief, but also    evidence, that the study of\ncomputer programs as mathematical objects leads to more\nefficient methods for constructing them.\nThe papers in this     volume were presented at the Second\nInternational Conference on the         Mathematics of Program\nConstruction, held at St. Catherine's College,       Oxford, June\n29 - July 3, 1992. The conference was organized by             the\nOxford University Programming Research Group, and continued\nthe     theme set by the first - the use of crisp, clear\nmathematics in the         discovery and design of algorithms. The\nsecond conference gives evidence of the ever-widening impact\nof precise mathematical methods in program         development.\nThere are papers applying mathematics not only to              sequential\nprograms but also to parallel and on-current                     applications,\nreal-time and reactive systems, and to designs                realised\ndirectly in hardware.
