The eight papers in\nthe book fall into three groups.\nThe   first three papers discuss particular programming\nsubstrates for parallel   symbolic computation, especially for\ndistributed memory machines. The next  three papers discuss\nnovel ways of computing with elements of finite fields and\nwith algebraic numbers. The finite field technique is\nespecially    interesting since it uses the Connection Machine,\na SIMD machine, to achievesurprising amounts of\nparallelism. One of the parallel computing substrates is\nalso used to implement a real root isolation technique.\nOne of the   crucial algorithms in modern algebraic\ncomputation is computing the         standard, or Gr|bner, basis of\nan ideal. The final two papers discuss two   different\napproaches to speeding their computation.
