Every technology that ever promised to free us has quietly reshaped us instead. Paul Fergus is a Professor of Machine Learning at Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU), where he has directed innovative research and teaching in artificial intelligence for over two decades. With a career spanning more than 30 years in industry and academia, through symbolic AI, machine learning, deep learning, ethics, and applied systems, he has authored over 250 peer-reviewed papers, and co-authored Applied Deep Learning: Tools, Techniques, and Implementation, published by Springer. He has successfully supervised over 20 PhD students, 200 MSc projects and 100 BSc projects.
Holding a BSc in Artificial Intelligence, an MSc in Computing for Commerce and Industry, and a PhD in Intelligent Systems, Paul has bridged academic research and real-world impact. He co-founded Conservation AI eight years ago, a platform pioneering the use of machine learning—especially deep learning and computer vision—to monitor wildlife and combat biodiversity loss. Conservation AI has processed over 100 million images to date via drones and remote cameras, detecting endangered species such as pangolins in real time and even alerting rangers to poacher activity in under 20 seconds. It has been featured by the Institute of Physics as a flagship UK science initiative.
