This book addresses the many real-life challenges in epilepsy care that fall outside the scope of clinical guidelines. In fifty short, accessible case samples, it offers practical insights into situations where standard protocols fall short—whether due to complex cases, unexpected outcomes, or patient preferences.
Written with young clinicians in mind, the book draws on the author’s teaching experience to highlight overlooked but essential topics, combining practical advice with deeper understanding of physiological, pathological, and sociocultural aspects of epilepsy. It also explores underrepresented disease theory and offers ideas to inspire clinically relevant research.
Clear, thoughtful, and experience-driven, this book aims to support early-career professionals in developing sound clinical judgement and a broader perspective on epileptology.
Peter Wolf graduated in 1963 from Heidelberg University, Germany, where he also started his career in epileptology with Dieter Janz as his mentor. In 1973 they moved to Berlin where he took his PhD with a dissertation on “Psychoses with epilepsy”.
In 1985 he became Medical Director of the epilepsy hospital Mara in Bethel, Bielefeld, which under his leadership developed into a modern epilepsy centre with new departments for epilepsy surgery, psychotherapy and rehabilitation. In 2003 he moved to the Danish Epilepsy Centre Filadelfia in Dianalund, Denmark, where he still belongs to the research group. He held a professorship at Copenhagen University and became visiting professor at the Federal University of Santa Catarina, Florianopolis, Brazil, and Vilnius University, Lithuania.
In the International League against Epilepsy (ILAE), Peter Wolf was Secretary General from 1993 to 2001 and President from 2005 to 2009. ILAE’s distance education program Virepa was founded by him in 2004.
In his retirement, he lives in Sønderborg on the Danish seaside. He continues organizing and directing the annual Baltic Sea Summer School for Epilepsy, and teaching at Latin American Summer School, Dianalund Summer School and Virepa.
