Home to more than 70 million, Central Asia is a vast region spanning mountain peaks over 7000 meters to lowland deserts and many large inland lakes, including the Caspian Sea, Aral Sea, Balkhash, and Issyk Kul. Due to historical reasons, Central Asia has received less scientific attention in the past 30 years than others parts of Asia, something that has been noted multiple Assessment Reports by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Here we present current research on aspects of recent and ongoing changes to the social-environmental systems of Central Asia, highlighting key knowledge gaps and challenges to adaptation and providing glimpses to possible futures. Contributors to this peer-reviewed book include leading researchers from Central Asia, Europe, and the USA. Target audiences are researchers and graduate students in environmental science, landscape ecology, land change science, rural sociology, remote sensing, natural hazards, and sustainability science.

Geoffrey M. Henebry is a full professor in the Department of Geography, Environment, and Spatial Sciences and associate director of the Center for Global Change and Earth Observations at Michigan State University. Dr. Henebry received his Ph.D. in environmental science from the University of Texas at Dallas in the field of ecological modeling. His research interests are broad, but a recurrent theme is the use of remote sensing and geospatial technologies to study environmental patterns and processes, including quantitative analysis and modeling of land surface phenology and land cover land use change.
Sagynbek Orunbaev is an associate professor in the Department of Environmental Sustainability and Climate Science at the American University of Central Asia. Dr. Orunbaev received his Ph.D. in physics and mathematics from the Institute of Dynamics of Geosphere of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Moscow, Russia, in the field of seismic hazard assessment. Dr. Orunbaev is an environmental geo-data scientist and geophysicist with over 25 years of experience in geospatial data analytics across environmental, climate change, hydrological, hydrogeological, natural disasters, and agricultural applications.

Publication Date:

18 January 2027

Publisher:

Michigan State University

Imprint:

Springer

ISBN-13:

9783032379849

Format:

Hardback
