It is designed to serve either as a text for a course in RC wall design or as a reference for systematic self-study of the subject. The text leads the reader through the complete design of shear walls using a sequence that follows the same general order that would unfold in an actual design. The author pulls together the design of the ordinary RC shear walls with various configurations into a single reference and many practical design examples are provided throughout. The book utilizes design codes and current industry literature as the basis for structural wall design specifications and draws upon publications of the American Concrete Institute Standards, i.e., Building Code Requirements for Structural Concrete ACI 318-19, and Minimum Design Loads and Associated Criteria for Buildings and Other Structures ASCE 7-22. The book is divided into seven chapters. Chapter 1 provides determination of center of mass and center of rigidity. Chapter 2 deals with distribution of direct and indirect shear. Chapter 3 focuses on the computations of seismic design base shear. Chapter 4 discusses the slenderness of the walls. Chapter 5 considers the design of ordinary RC shear walls with practical and real examples. Chapter 6 study the slenderness phenomenon and its influence on the load-carrying capacity of the loaded RC walls. Chapter 7 presents the development anchorage, and splicing of reinforcing steel bars. Throughout the book, the presented design procedures followed the recently updated code requirements. Moreover, they provided a roadmap enabling students, fresh graduates, and practicing engineers to create their own programming codes, employing any of the available computer tools, which increase productivity for practicing or in design offices. The book contains abundant two- and three-dimensional figures to facilitate the reader’s explanation and analysis procedures as well as adding clarity and demonstrating the key points.

Dr. Sayed Mahmoud is a Professor of structural and earthquake engineering in the Department of Civil and Construction Engineering, College of Engineering, Imam Abdulrahman Bin Faisal University, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
