It challenges the Eurocentric dominance in securitisation studies by shifting the focus to autochthonous processes in the Central Sahel, highlighting what can be described as a double absence in current scholarship. On one hand, the securitisation literature has been dominated by debates between philosophical (Wæver et al., 1993; Buzan, Wæver \u0026amp; De Wilde, 1998) and sociological (Bigo, 2008; Huysmans, 2011) approaches. Although a reconciled framework (Balzacq, 2011; 2015) has emerged to address this binary opposition, its theorisation and operationalisation remain predominantly Eurocentric. Despite growing efforts to decentralise the framework towards non-Western contexts (Vuori, 2008; Kapur \u0026amp; Mabon, 2018; Kaunert \u0026amp; Ezeokafor, 2022), African securitisation studies have mostly focused on the securitisation strategies of Great Powers on the continent (Ziebell de Oliveira \u0026amp; Fernandes Cardoso, 2020; Idahosa, Degterev \u0026amp; Ikhidero, 2021), perpetuating a metropole-periphery perspective while overlooking indigenous securitising dynamics.\u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp\u003eThe situation in the Central Sahel, particularly after NATO’s intervention in Libya, has spurred significant scholarly attention. However, current research tends to fall into five main categories: foreign military interventions in the Sahel (Carayol, 2023), analyses of Violent Non-State Actors (VNSAs) (Martinez, 2023), holistic assessments of the crisis’s multifaceted nature (Some, 2022a; 2022b), violent conflicts between herders and farmers (Cline, 2023), and documentation of threat perceptions from local populations (Hagberg et al., 2019).\u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp\u003eThis book aims to deepen the understanding of securitisation dynamics in illiberal, non-Western contexts and their real-world consequences for civilians. Specifically, it examines the discrepancy between the Burkina Faso junta’s securitising discourses and their treatment of the civilian population between September 2022 and May 2024. The investigation has three key objectives: first, to explore the complex causes of Burkina Faso’s insecurity crisis over the last decade; second, to analyse the regime of practices under the Burkinabé juntas; and third, to investigate the consequences of the junta’s securitising discourse on civilians, highlighting abuses by Burkinabé enforcement agencies and the junta’s liberticidal practices.\u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp\u003eAdopting a hybrid epistemological approach, this research embraces interpretivism pragmatically, aiming to move beyond the veriphobic tendencies of post-positivism (Fluck, 2017) by incorporating non-subjective elements (Nunes, 2015, p.146). The study also employs decolonial lenses to deprovincialise the subject matter.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003c\/div\u003e\u003cdiv\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSamuele Minelli Zuffa is a Visiting Research Fellow at Dublin City University (DCU) and collaborates with Prof. Christian Kaunert. Currently based in Dakar, He is a Security and Intelligence analyst with work experience with the International Crisis Group and Armed Conflict Location \u0026amp; Event Data (ACLED), world-leading research centres in peace and conflict studies. Samuele graduated with distinction in December 2024 from the Erasmus Mundus International Master’s in Security, Intelligence, and Strategic Studies (IMSISS), a program offered by the University of Glasgow, DCU, Univerzita Karlova, Trento University, and OTH Regensburg. He also earned a cum laude bachelor’s degree in Diplomatic and International Sciences from the University of Bologna (Italy) in 2022. Samuele’s life and work experiences have taken him to Africa five times, including Tanzania (2018), Côte d’Ivoire (2023), and Senegal (2022, 2024, 2026), allowing him to gain first-hand insights into the region’s political and security landscapes.\u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp\u003eProf. Dr. Christian Kaunert is Professor of International Security at Dublin City University (DCU) and Director of the International Centre for Policing and Security at the University of South Wales. Previously, he served as Academic Director at the Institute for European Studies, Vrije Universiteit Brussel, and Professor of International Politics at the University of Dundee, where he also directed the European Institute for Security and Justice, a Jean Monnet Centre for Excellence. He has taught and conducted research at numerous prestigious institutions, including University of Shandong (China), IBEI Barcelona (Spain), University of Cairo (Egypt), and the European Institute of Public Administration (Maastricht, Netherlands). He has held senior positions at the University of Dundee, European University Institute (Florence), and University of Salford, and has been an invited expert for the European Parliament, EU Institute for Security Studies, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and NATO. He  has been awarded seven Marie Curie Fellowships, four Jean Monnet Chairs, and several Jean Monnet Centres of Excellence. He also received a Horizon 2020 research grant on terrorist radicalisation processes, Mindb4Act. He is currently the Editor of the Journal of Contemporary European Studies and has held several leadership roles in academic associations such as UACES and the European Union Studies Association\u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp\u003eDr. Souleymane Yameogo is a political scientist whose research explores how insecurity, political violence, and authoritarian rule reshape democratic legitimacy, political representation, and citizen–state relations in Africa. He is a Research Associate on an ERC-funded project on democratic politics at the University of Glasgow and an Honorary Fellow at the Centre of African Studies, University of Edinburgh.\u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp\u003eDr. Yameogo combines first-hand experience of democratic mobilisation with rigorous quantitative research. He co-founded Balai Citoyen (Civic Broom), one of West Africa's most influential pro-democracy civic movements, which played a central role in the 2014 popular uprising that ended the twenty-seven-year rule of President Blaise Compaoré in Burkina Faso. This unique perspective continues to shape his research on democracy, security, and political change across Africa.\u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp\u003eDr. Yameogo has taught and delivered guest lectures on conflict, authoritarianism, democracy, and international security at the University of Glasgow, OTH Regensburg (Germany), and the University of Edinburgh.
