New topics include rules for stochastic parallel machine scheduling and for stochastic online scheduling, models of flow shops with reentry, fixed parameter tractability, machine learning applications in scheduling, and new designs and implementations of scheduling systems. The main structure of the book as per previous edition consists of three parts. The first part focuses on deterministic scheduling and the related combinatorial problems. The second part covers probabilistic scheduling models; in this part, it is assumed that processing times and other problem data are random and not known in advance. The third part deals with scheduling in practice; it covers heuristics that are popular with practitioners and discusses system design and implementation issues. All three parts of this new edition have been revamped and streamlined and the references have been made up-to-date. Theoreticians and practitioners alike find this book of interest. Graduate students in operations management, operations research, industrial engineering, and computer science find the book an accessible and invaluable resource. Scheduling: Theory, Algorithms, and Systems serves as an essential reference for professionals working on scheduling problems in manufacturing, services, and other environments.

Michael Pinedo is a Julius Schlesinger professor of Operations Management at New York University’s Stern School of Business. He received an Ir. degree in Mechanical Engineering from Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands in 1973 and a Ph.D. in Operations Research from the University of California at Berkeley in 1978. His research focuses on the modeling of production and service systems, and in particular planning and scheduling systems. Recently, his research has also focused on operational risk in the services industries. Professor Pinedo has been actively involved in industrial systems development. He supervised the development and implementation of two scheduling systems for International Paper and participated in the development of systems at Goldman Sachs, Philips, Siemens, and Merck. Professor Pinedo is currently a department editor of Production and Operations Management, associate editor of Annals of Operations Research, associate editor of International Journal of Production Research, and advisory board member of the Journal of the Operational Research Society.

Publication Date:

31 October 2026

Publisher:

Springer Nature Switzerland

Imprint:

Springer

ISBN-13:

9783032365347

Format:

Hardback
