It is both a comprehensive and quick reference source, including contributions from trematode genomics to infection control and outreach programs.

Readers will easily find information on all relevant subjects such as parasite taxonomy, epidemiology, and physiology, as well as research findings from malacology on snail hosts and the parasites’ existence in non-human animals. In addition, medical chapters are devoted to the pathogenesis, immunology, symptoms, and diagnosis of schistosomiasis.

Finally, the expert authors touch on treatment and other intervention options, making this work a valuable reference within the WHO strategy for schistosomiasis control (the neglected tropical diseases road map 2021–2030) and the targets of SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being) to reduce the number of people requiring interventions against NTDs. The book is rounded off by a captivating overview on contemporary and future prospects for disease control, outreach programs, and public health implications.

All contents are enriched with most recent insights from research, teaching and practice on schistosomiasis. As such, students, scientists, biologists, public health practitioners and all interested in the natural history of this medically important disease will appreciate the present collection.

Jared S. Bakuza obtained his PhD in ecology and evolutionary biology from the University of Glasgow, UK after writing a thesis on the ecology of Schistosoma mansoni among sympatric humans and non-human primates in the Gombe Ecosystem, Tanzania. He is currently a Senior Lecturer at Dar es Salaam University College of Education, a constituent of the University of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania where he teaches biological and biomedical sciences. Dr. Bakuza has received several research grants including a recent one from the World Health Organization/TDR to work on geospatial mapping of neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) in southern Tanzania. Dr. Bakuza has researched and published extensively on schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminthiases. His current research work focuses on studying the impact of sanitation and hygienic practices on environmental microbial contaminations. He has also supervised postgraduate students (Masters and PhD) on various parasitic diseases particularly schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminthiases.

Alan Fenwick is an Emeritus Professor in the Faculty of Medicine, School of Public Health at Imperial College, London. He studied MSc and PhD at Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine and has since focused on Parasitology, and built a hugely successful career in the field of Public Health. Professor Fenwick has lived and worked in Tanzania, Sudan, and Egypt on the control and research of schistosomiasis and other Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs). He is the founder of the Schistosomiasis Control Initiative (SCI), an organization which has been recognized globally for being highly effective in the control of schistosomiasis through distribution of 200 million doses of praziquantel drugs in 16 endemic countries. Prof. Fenwick is a recipient of many awards and honours including notably the Queen’s OBE for his exceptional contribution to our understanding of schistosomiasis. Other awards and honours have come from several national and international organizations and institutions including the governments in Niger and Burkina Faso in recognition of his work on schistosomiasis there. Alan has had many scientific papers published, several book chapters and one book “A tale of a man a worm and a snail”.

Publication Date:

18 October 2026

Publisher:

Springer Nature Switzerland

Imprint:

Springer

ISBN-13:

9783032345219

Format:

Hardback
