This volume incorporates a large amount of research focused primarily on urban planning and oriented mainly at the architectural and building scale. It highlight emerging researches that emphasizes the importance of developing integrated concepts of art and culture in the design of urban and architectural landscapes for sustainable development. Through the research presented, the concept of reinventing the built environment is emphasized through emerging trends and field experiences, highlighting changes and illustrating methods and tools for renewed architectural design. In detail, the contributions have been collected with the aim of illustrating examples and case studies that can suggest new approaches, the use of innovative tools and emerging theories for sustainable design and management of the built environment that is increasingly attentive to the prospects of carbon neutral urban cities.

Federico Camerin is Architect-urban planner at the Università Iuav di Venezia (2014), I was a researcher in 2014-15 and 2016-17 at the same University through two annual research grants in urbanism. Between 2017 and 2020 I was Early Stage Researcher in the frame of the European Horizon-2020 project ‘urbanHist’ through the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Action - Innovative Training Networks programme, obtaining the double degree of Doctor in Architecture (University of Valladolid, UVa) and Ph.D. (Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, Germany). In 2021 I was a postdoctoral researcher in urbanism at Iuav with a stay at the Instituto Universitario de Urbanística (IUU-UVa) and, in 2022-2024, I was appointed as postdoctoral researcher with the research project ‘Urban Regeneration as a new version of Urban Renewal Programmes. Achievements and failures’ by the Spanish national programme Margarita Salas at UVa with a stay at the Research Group on Architecture, Urbanism and Sustainability. My research and working interests intertwine 19th- and 20th-century city-making process with architecture and planning history, spatial planning, and urban governance.

Francesco Alberti is Associate Professor of Urban Planning and design at the Department of Architecture of the University of Florence, where he is currently the coordinator of the Laboratory of Urban Design for the master's degree course in Urban and Regional Planning and in charge with the teachings of Urban Design for the Laboratory of Green Systems Planning for the master's degree course in Landscape Architecture and of Smart City Planning for the postgraduate programme “ABITA” (Bioecological Architecture and Technological Innovation for the Environment). In the same department, he is the scientific coordinator of the research unit "SUP&R" (Sustainable Urban Projects & Research) and of the related university spin-off "Urban LIFE” (Urban Liveability & Innovation for Everyone).As a member of the Italian National Institute of Urban Planning (INU - Istituto Nazionale di Urbanistica) he joined the National Commetees “Networks, Infrastructure and Innovation Policies” (2014-2016) and “Urban Accessibility for Everyone” (2016-). Since 2106 he is the President of the Regional division of INU in Tuscany.

Paola Gallo Stampino, Ph.D., graduated in Materials Science from the University of Milano-Bicocca, defending a thesis titled "Sol-gel synthesis, spectromagnetic characterization, and luminescence properties of scintillating glasses." Subsequently, in 2007, she obtained a Ph.D. in Materials Engineering from the Politecnico di Milano, with a dissertation titled "Reactivity and hydration kinetics in cementitious systems: stabilization/solidification of hazardous waste."Since May 2008, she was a researcher at the Department of Chemistry, Materials and Chemical Engineering "Giulio Natta" at the Politecnico di Milano, and was promoted to associate professor in July 2017. She is part of the research group Mat4En2 - Materials for Energy and Environment (Mat4En2), focusing her interest on of materials for energy and environmental applications.Her scientific activity has always focused on the synthesis, characterization, and use of sustainable and innovative materials, with particular attention to the energy, environmental technologies, and construction sectors. In recent years, she has expanded her interests to include sustainability assessment through Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodologies, which encompass economic (LCCA) and social (S-LCA) variants, applied to industrial products and processes. This approach is also widely integrated into her teaching activities, involving the schools of Architecture, Design, and Engineering at the Politecnico di Milano, with courses almost entirely focused on E-LCA.
