GreenDIGIT: Greening Digital Infrastructures with Sustainable Architecture and Design Principles

The book provides a systematic and forward-looking framework for improving sustainability and energy efficiency in digital infrastructures and data centres across their full lifecycle. The book begins with a structured analysis of the sustainability landscape and identifies the major technology trends, operational challenges, and strategic drivers that are shaping the transition toward more sustainable digital infrastructure systems. It presents sustainability not as an isolated technical issue, but as a cross-cutting design principle that must be addressed from planning and architecture to deployment, operation, monitoring, and governance.

A distinctive contribution of the book is its integration of conceptual, technical, operational, and regulatory perspectives. It offers a systematic analysis of the relevant standards, regulations, metrics, KPIs, and industry best practices that increasingly define environmental sustainability in digital infrastructures and data centres. At the same time, it provides architecture frameworks, lifecycle models, design principles, monitoring approaches, and technical examples that help translate sustainability goals into practical engineering and management decisions. The book aligns with Life Cycle Assessment methodology and adapts it to digital infrastructures, supporting a more rigorous treatment of both operational and embodied environmental impacts.

Written as both a reference work and a practical handbook, the book is intended for researchers, application developers, infrastructure operators, managers, auditors, and decision-makers. It also introduces Green and Environmental Sustainability Competence as a structured domain for academic curriculum development and professional training. By connecting architecture, lifecycle thinking, operations, monitoring, compliance, and competence development, the book provides one of the first broad and coherent treatments of sustainability by design for digital infrastructures.

Yuri Demchenko is a guest researcher at the Institute of Informatics and an associate professor at the National Technical University of Ukraine "Igor Sikorski Kyiv Polytechnic Institute". He graduated from the same university, where he also received his PhD degree. His main research areas include Data Science and Data Management, Big Data Infrastructure and Technologies for Data Analytics, System Engineering and Architecture Design Principles. He was involved in many European projects such as EGEE, GEANT4, FAIRsFAIR, SLICES-RI. He acted as a coordinator of the GreenDIGIT project in 2024-2025 and currently continues research and development on conceptual, architectural and design principles for greening digital infrastructures by optimising energy efficiency and reducing environmental impact. As an active researcher and educator, he continuously improves instructional methodology for teaching System and Software Engineering, as well as innovative research methodologies in the current time of the growing role of Generative AI.
