Significant strides have been made in the HIV care continuum, including the introduction of and improvements in biomedical prevention of new cases and improved treatment modalities for persons living with HIV. In spite of these improvements, young persons, particularly young men who have sex with men and young transgender women, continue to be disproportionately impacted by HIV. Adolescents and young adults face unique challenges that impact HIV prevention and treatment including physical, social, emotional and sexual growth and development, socio-environmental factors that drive HIV epidemic in youth, and legal/ethical issues.

The proposed book is designed to explore these unique aspects of the adolescent experience and provide a comprehensive overview of all aspects of care associated with prevention and treatment of HIV for adolescents and young adults. Written by experts in the field, the book provides an introductory framework that examines the historical aspects of adolescent HIV, and the epidemiology of the disease, health disparities and legal and ethical issues affecting HIV infected and at risk adolescents and young adults. Subsequent sections will focus on prevention and treatment and closing chapters will highlight issues specific to special populations within this demographic. Clinical case examples will be utilized throughout the text to provide a clinical grounding for each chapter and context within which to examine each of these issues.
